WOODY HUGHES
BASS
I've been a lover of music for as long as I can remember, and my first musical memories were my mother's playing of the piano and my father playing his acoustic guitar during Sunday morning church services. To be honest, I never really got into the old hymnals nor contemporary Christian music and admittedly, I have always had very eclectic tastes in music. It wasn’t until I was in my late 20’s that I finally settled on living my life as a metal head.
Driven by my ongoing love of music, around my 30th birthday, I decided to get a late start and learn to play the guitar. I started with a Schecter Riot 6-string, and played it on and off until I moved back to Indiana in 2014. At that point I decided to start taking music more seriously, and picked up my first bass at the age of 40. I've always had a love for the rhythm and groove of music, so getting serious by learning the bass just seemed logical to me. If I weren't a bassist, I'd probably stay in the rhythm section and be a drummer.
In 2015, I placed an ad on craigslist.org to start a new band, and shortly thereafter, Divine Martyr was born.
In regards to a setup, I thank Ibanez and Schecter for making great basses. My current setup is a Schecter Extreme Stiletto 5-string and Extreme Stiletto Studio 5-string, along with a BOSS ME-50B digital effects processor. To be honest, I find the ME-50B to be a bit overkill for my needs, but it does help to dial-in some interesting tones for those times when a song calls for a touch of something different.
Finally, I thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for granting me the gift to make music. Without Him, I would not be in this project making great music with such a talented group of friends that I call family.
